Our Classroom Buddies were started during the 2008-2009 school year as part of our Character Education program. Floresville Primary won a promising practices award for the activity last year.
Each year a first and second grade classroom are teamed up together as “buddies”. The two classes meet once or twice a month together for several activities throughout the year. Some classes will complete art projects together. Other classes have gone to computer class together, played math games or read to each other. Sometimes the classes will meet for a combined recess. Around the holidays the classes exchange cards and letters as well as make special projects for local nursing homes.
The Classroom Buddies allows for the interaction of different ages and provides the opportunity to model and practice social skills. This year (2009-2010) an additional component has been added. Each team of buddies will implement one learning service project during the second semester of school. Some of the teams have already started looking for ideas and ways to help!
