This weekend Mrs. Thayer, Mrs. Henke, Jai Ramesh and his mom delivered the materials the two classes had collected for the recycling bin. Way to help our environment classroom buddies!

April 12, 2010Campus Beautification Service-Learning Project
April 12, 2010We are starting a service learning project with Mrs. Cisneros’s ABLE classroom and Ms. Oakes’ 2nd grade classroom involving the planters around our campus. It will consist of potting new plants in the containers located throughout our campus with plans for the containers to be moved to the elementary schools next year. Not having the greenest of thumbs, I have asked for guidance from Mr. Johnny Hewell, Community Service Coordinator from the S.T.A.R.S. program, to assist us in this project.
For those that may not know, the S.T.A.R.S. program stands for: Student initiative, Thoughtful service, Authentic learning, Reflective practice, and Substantive partnerships. One of the missions of the S.T.A.R.S. after school program is to give a student the opportunity to increase self-esteem by presenting service-learning activities that begin in the classroom and extend to the projects that are in place and giving students the opportunity to achieve their highest potential to become confident and caring individuals. They are a volunteer after-school program. The S.T.A.R.S. program is funded by the Floresville Independent School District as well as through self-sustaining funds mostly consisting of plant sales.
Mr. Hewell has graciously agreed to allow our students to visit the greenhouses located next to the alternative campus and have some of his students give a tour and discuss the best ways to plant in containers. We are also very happy to report that he is going to donate the plants for the containers from their stock of plants in the greenhouses. As a thank you for their help, I would like to ask you and your family to donate any plant containers (in good condition) you may have extra around your house to the S.T.A.R.S. program. Any size of container is welcome.
Thank you in advance for any donations you may send our way. I will be keeping you informed of our progress, as well as, letting you know when we will have a “Family Planting Time” here at school. It is with great hope that we will have our campus looking spectacular before this year ends. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 830-393-5310 or email me at tpfeil@fisd.us.
Sincerely,
